Through Payroll Giving, Nedbank has enabled the start-up and development of a Sustainable Community Garden based in Orange Farm. The property, called Place of Hope, has been a central community facility for many years. The garden consists of two 170sqm tunnels, a seedling nursery, a water wise irrigation system and a fertile environment to produce a variety of crops. The project currently employs three people, who are receiving training through AgriSeta and provides fresh produce to six Early Childhood Development centres, supporting just over 150 children. By July 2022, the garden will produce enough fresh vegetables to empower at least one woman in the community to start her own mini vegetable market and create sustainable income for the project in years to come. The aim is to replicate this project at serval sites in the area creating job opportunities, skills development, and nutritious vegetables for the residence of Orange Farm.
